Portland, OR—KUNP TV has been recognized as a 2012 Public Health Hero by Multnomah County. KUNP is the only business to receive this award this year, and is one of six recipients out of more than 50 nominees.

KUNP partnered with Multnomah County Health Department to develop and deliver culturally effective obesity and chronic disease prevention messages to Latino communities. Working with the It Starts Here community awareness campaign, KUNP produced 5 television messages promoting increased physical activity and healthy beverage options for children. They also developed news and community segments that promote the idea that healthy kids learn better.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from Multnomah County” said David Smith, KUNP Station Manager. “The It Starts Here campaign has brought valuable information and resources to the Latino communities that we serve, and it is helping to raise awareness on important health and lifestyle topics.”

KUNP TV has been broadcasting in the Portland metro area since 2003, and produces the only daily news in Spanish in any medium in the market. Along with general news the station has two specialized community outreach initiatives: Salud es Vida focusing on health information, and Destino: Éxito, Edúcate focusing on education and career development.

KUNP TV is a Univision network affiliate and sister station to KATU/ABC. It is owned by Fisher Communications, an innovative local media company with television, radio, internet and mobile operations throughout the western United States. The Company is headquartered at Fisher Plaza in Seattle, WA.

This March, KOMO Communities teamed up with KOMO 4, KOMO Radio, STAR 101.5, KVI 570 and The Girl Scouts of Western Washington to bring some special treats to the troops.

Operation Cookie Drop is a program that allows cookie customers to purchase Girl Scout cookies at site sales and donate them to US military personnel. Each Girl Scout troop had a donation box designated for cookie donations to the troops. Through Operation Cookie Drop, the girls learn the importance of giving back to their community and, in some small way, thank our military personnel. The same can be said for Fisher Communications.

This year, thanks to a great team effort, the official, final total for 2011 Operation Cookie Drop was 138,166 boxes!! That’s 16,681 more boxes than last year! Now that’s sweet.

Fisher Interactive Network <http://design.fisherinteractive.com/~fsci/news/community-news/2011/04/our-portfolio/fisher-interactive-network/> , (FIN) and the United Way of King County <http://www.uwkc.org/> partnered this March to shine a spotlight on the problem of hunger in our community. The goal of Hunger Action Week was to show the community in 5 days, 5 ways to take action against hunger.

KOMOnews.com, KOMO Communities reporters and KOMO Social Media staff spent the week of March 21-25th, 2011 telling the stories of need, profiling the people who are raising awareness and celebrating the successes in the fight against hunger.
“We feel it’s important to partner with United Way to highlight this tremendous need in our community,” said FIN Vice President and General Manager Matt Spragins. “We are happy to devote our time and resources to such a worthy cause.”

KOMOnews.com Reporter, Martha Kang’s took the Hunger challenge – 7 days at 7 dollars a day – and reported on her success daily.

Read Day 1 of Martha’s Story

Other KOMO Reporters also supported the effort with their stories:

Michael Harthorne’s KOMO Communities ‘hunger’ story, day 1

Topline Blog Friday (in advance of Hunger Week)

Topline Blog Monday

To highlight the event and make a bigger splash, a “fork” was placed on the top of the KOMOnews.com homepage with a link to the United Way information page. Other top placement included the promo spot on the right rail and the high placement of Martha’s hunger challenge story in the top headlines and Michael’s community hunger story promoted in the Local & Regional section.

Each day that week KOMOnews.com published a new community hunger related story and a blog post from Martha and shared all of the Hunger Action Week related content through KOMO News’ social media channel. There were also mentions in the KOMOnews.com segment on KOMO Newsradio several times that week.

FIN was proud to partner with the United Way of King County on Hunger Action Week 2011 and looks forward to other successful partnerships in the future.

On Wednesday, March 16, Fisher Communications partnered with the American Red Cross and Uwajimaya stores to aid tens of thousands of people who are homeless and living without basic necessities like food and water due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Our stations provided phone banks to collect pledges and Uwajimaya stores in the Greater Seattle area also collected donations.

While Fisher provided resources to facilitate these efforts and many of our team members volunteered to answer phones, we wanted to make sure that all team members had an opportunity to support and contribute to these efforts. The American Red Cross has a variety of ways to donate, but Fisher set up a pledge form online where team members could also donate through an after-tax deduction directly from their paycheck. Team members could donate any amount of money and Fisher matched the first $10 made by each team member. All donations were sent directly to the American Red Cross.

Through the combined efforts of all the Fisher Communications’ properties, over half a million dollars has been raised to the American Red Cross to help in the relief efforts!
